Lesson 2 - Learn Hindi vowels part 1

This lesson is going to assume that you know English and you are going to learn to write Hindi or Devanagari script using the alphabets you already know.

So we will start with the number 3 and the letter "T"

So with the above shapes we are going to make our first alphabet (vowel)

A connector between 3 and T form the first vowel in the devanagari script. First vowel is "a"  (a as in father). An additional T forms the long vowel "A".

Also please note that since the vowel अ(a) is present inherently in all consonants, there is no independent vowel sign for it. However for the long vowel sign, it is adding a shape similar to capital T to an alphabet. Thus

क is ka

ल is la

ह is ha

कल is kal while काल is kaal.

हल is hal while हाल is haal.

Also note that the final consonant in a word is always sounded without the

inherent a sound. So कल is kal and not kala. लाल is laal and not laala.

kal means tomorrow/yesterday - depends on context.

kaal does not have any meaning. This is given only to illustrate the use of

the long vowel sign.

So remember the long vowel sign for a is the capital letter T.

hal is plough

haal is condition. For example, you say kya haal hai (क्या हाल है?) how do you

feel? or how are you?

laal is color red.
